AIIMS sets new benchmarks in neurosurgery
The initiatives are aimed at enhancing the skill sets of neurosurgeons, elevating standards in medical practice and improving patient outcomes and accessibility of services.
The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi has told the Supreme Court that there can be no abortion of a 29-week-old pregnancy and the only way out is to carry out a caesarean in which 80 per cent chance is that the baby will be born alive.
The opinion was given by a medical board that had examined the 20-year-old B Tech student living in a hostel in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. The AIIMS board has suggested counselling by a psychiatrist of the hospital asking her to come to its OPD.
The apex court on January 19, 2023, had asked the Director, AIIMS, Delhi, to constitute a team of doctors to examine whether the termination of 29 weeks pregnancy of an unmarried 20-year-old B Tech student can be conducted safely.

The Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that it would amount to killing.
Posting the matter for hearing on February 2, as the girl is appearing for her exams starting today and ending on January 28, a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice JB Pardiwala was informed that the girl was insisting on the abortion and as birth of a child from an unwanted pregnancy would mar her career.
The girl’s lawyer told the court that she has already seen the report by the medical board, which had examined her. Referring to the AIIMS report which said that she needs counselling, the court asked Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to talk to the girl.
