Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) for faulty voter lists across various states, citing the poll body’s own admission.
“If the EC’s assessment is correct, and the government of India agrees with it, then the first step towards conducting a genuine Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is the immediate dissolution of the Lok Sabha,” he stated in a post on his WhatsApp channel.

“The EC has stated that the voter lists across various states on the basis of which the GENERAL ELECTIONS were held barely a year ago in 2024 are FAULTY and riddled with IRREGULARITIES. If that is indeed the case, and if the GoI agrees with the EC’s assessment, then the first step towards conducting a genuine SIR and STANDING ON MORAL HIGH GROUND is the IMMEDIATE DISSOLUTION OF LOK SABHA,” Banerjee said in his post
Banerjee emphasized that if the new Chief Election Commissioner is truly competent, the SIR should be implemented across the country, not selectively in poll-bound states. “If one truly supports the idea of SIR, then as per the EC’s own statement – the people of this country have been betrayed,” he said.
Banerjee outlined a three-step plan, demanding that the Lok Sabha be dissolved, SIR be conducted nationwide, and fresh elections be held thereafter. “Dissolve the House! Conduct SIR across the country! Go for elections and face the people!” he said, urging the EC and the government to take immediate action.
His remarks have sparked a fresh debate on electoral reforms and the integrity of the electoral process in India. As the country grapples with concerns over voter list accuracy and the credibility of the electoral system, Banerjee’s demands are likely to resonate with many who are calling for greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
