“The murder of Hariom is not just the killing of a man, it is the killing of humanity, justice, and the Constitution. Today in India, Dalits, tribals, Muslims, backward classes, and the poor—everyone whose voice is weak, whose share is being snatched away, and whose life is considered cheap—is being targeted,” said the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Raebareli MP, Rahul Gandhi, on handle X.
Five people have been arrested in connection with the lynching, and three police personnel have been suspended for alleged negligence. The police have appealed to residents not to spread any caste-related rumours about the incident.
The Congress has urged citizens to unite against this injustice and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of marginalised communities. “This fight must continue until the rights and dignity of every Indian are fully protected,” the party said.
The incident occurred when Hariom Valmiki was allegedly beaten to death by a group of villagers who suspected him of being a thief. The villagers had been on high alert due to rumors of a gang using drones to scout homes for robbery.
