Five persons drowned and six others were rescued in two separate mishaps in Rajasthan’s Balotara and Jalore districts, police said on Wednesday.

In Balotara, three persons including a woman and two children died and two others were seriously injured when the Bolero SUV they were travelling in was swept away in the surging Luni river.

The ill-fated vehicle, carrying eight passengers, was attempting to cross the weir causeway on the outskirts of Balotara when it was caught in the strong current, police said.

Following reports of the incident, authorities launched an extensive rescue operation involving local divers and police teams. Five people were pulled out alive, while the bodies of the woman and two children were later recovered.

District Collector Susheel Kumar and Superintendent of Police Ramesh Chandra rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue efforts. The injured were admitted to Balotara Hospital, where two remain in critical condition.

In another incident in Jalore district, two women and a 25-year-old man were swept away in the Sukadi (Jawai) river near Santhu village on Tuesday.

While the man and a 30-year-old woman drowned, another woman was rescued with injuries and admitted to a local hospital. The bodies of the deceased were later recovered, sources said.
