Four persons were killed and 18 others, mostly pilgrims, were injured when the sleeper coach they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck near Fatehpur town in Sikar district late Tuesday night.

The ill-fated sleeper coach was heading to Jaipur when it rammed into a truck coming from the opposite direction on the Bikaner–Jaipur Highway.

Most of the passengers were pilgrims from Gujarat who were returning home after paying obeisance at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, Jammu.

The collision was so powerful that four passengers died on the spot, and the front portion of the bus was badly damaged. The police and rescuers had to work hard to extricate some of the trapped passengers.

Locals and passers-by immediately alerted the ambulance services and the police, and helped escort the injured to nearby hospitals.

Some of the injured were referred to Kalyan Hospital, Sikar, the police said.
