24 lakh marked ‘dead’, 19 lakh ‘relocated’, 12 lakh ‘missing’: Over 58 lakh voters deleted from West Bengal draft rolls after SIR

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday published the draft electoral rolls in West Bengal following the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise aimed at overhauling the voter list.

The ECI has deleted 58,20,899 voters, accounting for around 7.59 per cent of the total electorate in the state.

According to the existing electoral rolls, West Bengal had a total of 7,66,37,529 voters. These rolls were also used during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

However, only 7,08,16,630 electors submitted their enumeration forms before the December 11 deadline.

The Election Commission said the “successful completion” of the enumeration phase was the result of coordinated efforts by thousands of election officials, including District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

“The successful completion of this phase is the result of coordinated efforts of DEOs of all 24 districts, 294 EROs, 3,059 AEROs, and BLOs deployed at 80,681 polling booths, supported by volunteers. Field representatives of all eight recognised political parties, including their district presidents, also actively participated, with as many as 1,81,454 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by them,” the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal said.

What Happens to Genuine Voters Missing From the Draft List?

Genuine voters whose names have been left out of the draft electoral roll still have an opportunity to get them restored.

Such voters can submit applications during the Claims and Objections period, which will run from December 16 to January 15, 2026.

Voters whose names have been excluded can file a claim application, while objections may be raised against entries that have been mistakenly included in the draft list.

If an elector does not find his or her name in the draft roll, they must fill Form 6 and submit it along with Annexure IV and other required documents.

So far, the poll body has received 3,24,800 Form 6 applications (with or without declarations) for the inclusion of new electors. Following verification and completion of the inquiry process, eligible names will be added to the electoral rolls.
