CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said here on Wednesday that the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill is a death knell for India’s constitutional federal system and parliamentary democracy.

He said according to this Bill, if a minister is sentenced to 5 years in any case and spends 30 days in jail, he will have to step down from his post.

The Left leader said, “Naturally, the prime minister or BJP ministers will not be sent to jail. This provision is a calculated conspiracy to destabilise non-BJP governments and prevent them from functioning.”

“After the misuse of ED, CBI, and NIA, and turning Governor offices into BJP offices, if this law is passed, the existence of non-BJP governments will become almost impossible. Therefore, every citizen who believes in democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law must strongly oppose this audacious bill,” he added.

Welcoming the INDIA bloc’s decision to nominate Justice V Sudarshan Reddy for the post of Vice President, Bhattacharya called it a positive and timely decision. “Justice Reddy has a remarkable track record in defending the Constitution and human rights. He had declared the Salwa Judum campaign, which promoted corporate loot in Chhattisgarh, as unconstitutional. Such a person is needed for this post. This country does not need someone aligned with RSS ideology,” he said.

Speaking on the INDIA’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’, he noted that the campaign is turning into a people’s movement to protect democracy and the Constitution. It has received widespread public support. “The message of the ‘Yatra’ is to protect each and every vote and to use it wisely. A government that has been a burden for 20 years must be uprooted from power. It carries the message of both resistance and change. Heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support,” he said.
