Twelve people, including a child, were crushed to death by a speeding truck near Sugusugi village on the Bareilly-Farrukhabad Highway on Thursday.

Most of the deceased were natives of Damgada village of Madanapur police station area of Shahjahanpur, police said, adding that they were on their way to take bath in the Ganga river at Panchal Ghat of Farrukhabad.

“The dead include eight men, three women and a child. The deceased have been identified as Lalaram, Puttu Lal, Siyaram, Suresh, Lavkush, Yatiram, Pothiram, Basanta Devi, Anantram (auto driver), Rupa Devi, Rahul and Rampa Devi,” a senior police official said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences over the accident.

All the 12 occupants of an autorickshaw, including the driver, were killed in the accident, they said.

The truck driver fled the scene, leaving his vehicle, they said.

The official said the collision between the vehicles was so severe that the auto was ripped into pieces.
