Uttar Pradesh has been witnessing intermittent showers for the past several days, disrupting daily life across the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the spell between August 1 and 7 brought exceptionally heavy rainfall—about 103% higher than normal for the period.

Data from the Lucknow Meteorological Centre shows that the state recorded 104.1 mm of rainfall during this week, against the normal 51.4 mm—more than double the average. In eastern Uttar Pradesh, rainfall reached 98 mm compared to the usual 51.5 mm, marking a 90% surplus, while western Uttar Pradesh saw 112.9 mm of rain against the normal 51.4 mm, a 120% increase.

Meteorological officials say these figures are likely to hold as monsoon conditions remain favourable, with the state expected to receive average or above-average rainfall through the end of September.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 1, the state has recorded a 10% surplus rainfall. Between June 1 and August 8, Uttar Pradesh received 457.2 mm of rain against the normal 416.4 mm. In eastern UP, however, rainfall has been 4% below normal—427.6 mm against the average 443.7 mm—while western UP experienced a 32% excess, with 499.5 mm against the usual 378.3 mm.

In the past 24 hours, the state capital received 22.5 mm of rain against the normal 4.4 mm, a staggering 481% above average. Overall, during this monsoon season (June 1 to August 8), Lucknow has logged 381.1 mm of rain, 3% above its seasonal average of 370.1 mm.
