The curtains have fallen on the life of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg, who was cremated with full state honours in his native Kamarkuchi village on Tuesday.

Fans, friends, and dignitaries gathered in large numbers to pay their final respects to their favourite artist.

Among the mourners were Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. Zubeen’s family followed the procession in separate vehicles, including his 85-year-old father and wife, Garima Saikia, sharing the grief of a state with their personal sorrow.

In a touching homage, fans sang “Mayabini,” one of Zubeen’s most cherished songs, which he had wished to be played at his funeral.

Zubeen Garg, 52, tragically passed away on September 19 in Singapore because of drowning. His sudden death shocked the nation and left millions of admirers grieving. Then his body was brought back to Assam. Lakhs of fans lined the streets to honor his memory.

The late singer’s journey home began at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, which had been opened to the public since Sunday for people to offer their last respects.

Thousands of fans, along with celebrities, flooded the complex to catch a final glimpse of the musical legend.

From the sports complex, a solemn procession moved toward Kamarkuchi village, about 20 kilometers away. Zubeen’s body was carried in a cold glass coffin inside a flower-adorned ambulance. They draped him in a traditional Assamese gamosa as a mark of state respect.

A large black-and-white portrait of the singer led the cortege. Fans walked alongside and paid tribute.

Zubeen Garg’s music spanned decades. Most of them blended contemporary styles with Assamese tradition. Because of this, he has remained a cultural icon whose songs touched hearts across generations.
