The Kapur family drama has just taken another twist. And this time the spotlight is on Rani Kapur, the matriarch of the family. The widow of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, Rani has knocked on the doors of the Delhi High Court. She has claimed that a family trust named after her was nothing but a fraudulent scheme designed to cut her out of her rightful assets.
According to the latest, Justice Vikas Mahajan recused himself from the case on Wednesday, prompting the court to list the matter before a new bench on Thursday, January 29. The court did not immediately freeze the trust, which existed even before Sunjay Kapur’s untimely death.

However, Justice Mini Pushkarna has issued summons in Rani’s suit, seeking replies from Priya Kapur and 22 other beneficiaries.
What Rani Kapur wants
Rani Kapur’s plea reads like a real-life thriller. She alleges that the trust was created behind her back without her informed consent leaving her entirely excluded from assets that were originally hers.
Documents were allegedly signed without explanation, some even left blank, all as part of a larger scheme to restructure the family estate in favor of others.
Upon seeing photocopies of the trust deed, Rani claims she realised that during Sunjay’s lifetime, the assets were intended solely for him, leaving her out of the picture. After his passing, 60% of the trust was slated for Priya Kapur, Sunjay’s third wife, while the rest would benefit his children: Samaira and Kiaan Kapur (with Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor) and Azairus Kapur (with Priya Kapur).
The Kapur family tree and polo incident
Sunjay Kapur, the Sona Comstar chairperson, passed away from cardiac arrest while playing polo in London last year. This shocked the business and Bollywood worlds alike. Before Priya, he was in a marital relationship with designer Nandita Mahtani. Later he married actor Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had Samaira and Kiaan.
In 2017, he married model-actor and businesswoman Priya Kapur, and the couple had a son, Azarius.
What’s next?
The next chapter unfolds Thursday in the Delhi High Court, where the new bench will take up the case. Rani Kapur’s challenge to the RK Family Trust could reshape the distribution of Sunjay Kapur’s estate
But the legal waters are murky. And the outcome is far from predictable.
