As soon as Netflix’s blockbuster ‘Stranger Things’ dropped the first four episodes of Season 5, theories around Holly Wheeler exploded across the internet. A character who stayed mostly in the background for the last four seasons is suddenly becoming very important to the story.

Who is Holly Wheeler?

In the series, Holly Wheeler is the youngest member of the Wheeler family. She is the little sister of Mike Wheeler and Nancy Wheeler, and the daughter of Ted and Karen Wheeler. In Season 1, Holly was just three years old and had almost no major connection to the main plot. But now, according to the Duffer Brothers, she is the surprising centerpiece of the final chapter.

After watching the first four episodes, fans are now connecting clues and beginning to believe that Holly may be tied directly to the show’s main villain, Vecna, also known as Henry Creel.

In Episode 2, titled “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler,” we see the Demogorgons take Holly into the Upside Down, leaving her parents badly injured. Once she arrives there, Vecna is shown treating her unusually well; granting her small wishes, keeping her safe, and even gifting her a music system. He manipulates her by saying he will protect her and her family from the monsters, slowly gaining her trust.

Why did Vecna take Holly Wheeler?

In the final episode of Part 1, Vecna comes to Hawkins and confronts Will. During this moment, he reveals his plan: he wants to reshape the world the way he sees it, and for that he needs children because they are “weak and easily manipulated.”

The full twist is still not out, but it’s clear now that Holly has been on Vecna’s radar for a long time. In Season 1, the Demogorgon even tried to take her away from Joyce Byers’ house. And in Season 5, Vecna, disguised as Mr. Watson, has trapped Holly’s body in the Upside Down while keeping her mind locked inside his memories of the 1950s.

We also learn that Vecna needs twelve children for his plan, and he has already taken four of them. Holly is one of the key pieces in this dark puzzle.

The true reveal of Vecna’s endgame will come in the next episodes, but one thing is certain for now: Holly Wheeler is in serious danger.
