Shwetha Menon has made history by being elected as the first female president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Her election marks a new chapter for the organisation, which represents actors in the Malayalam film industry.

In a conversation with Matrubhumi, Shwetha spoke about the challenges ahead and her vision for AMMA. She said the organisation would welcome back members who had previously resigned, including the survivor of the well-known actress assault case.

“She was once part of AMMA but chose to resign. If she decides to return, she would be welcome. But it’s not an urgent agenda right now,” Shwetha said.

She stressed that any return of former members must follow AMMA’s rules and bylaws, rather than being based on personal decisions.

Shwetha also shared her personal hopes for a more united association. “Those who left AMMA should come back. That’s the wish of the majority of our members. Everyone wonders why they distanced themselves. Personally, I hope for their return,” she said.

She added that bringing members back could take time and many discussions, possibly ten or even a hundred meetings, but she is ready to lead the effort with the support of the executive committee and general body.

At the same time, Shwetha highlighted the organisation’s responsibility to act against members facing allegations. “Those who are under allegations must step aside. This is a matter of social responsibility,” she noted.

Her remarks come in the backdrop of ongoing controversies in the Malayalam film industry. The Hema Committee Report, which investigated sexual assault and harassment in the industry, named several men involved in misconduct.

Following public scrutiny and criticism, actor Mohanlal resigned from his position as AMMA president in the same month the report was released.
