The promotional event for Rishab Shetty’s film ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, which was going to take place in Chennai on September 30, has been called off. The decision came after the tragic stampede in Karur that claimed 41 lives.

On Monday, the makers of the film, Hombale Films, released a statement on Instagram confirming the cancellation.

They said, “In view of the recent unfortunate incident, we have decided to cancel our ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ promotional event scheduled in Chennai tomorrow. We believe this is a time for reflection and solidarity with those affected. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families. We are grateful for your understanding and support, and we look forward to meeting our audience in Tamil Nadu at a more appropriate time.”

The Karur tragedy took place on the evening of September 27 during a political rally organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The stampede led to the loss of 41 lives, including 18 women, 13 men, and 10 children.

Following the tragedy, TVK chief Vijay held a video conference with his senior leaders from his Pattinapakkam residence. The discussion focused on the next steps and relief measures for the affected families.

Vijay had earlier announced financial aid of ₹20 lakh for each family who lost their loved one and ₹2 lakh for those injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also came forward with government support. He announced that the state would provide ₹10 lakh as compensation for the families of those who died and ₹1 lakh for each person who is still undergoing treatment.
