Punjab-based social media influencer Ranjit Kaur, popularly known as “Bhabhi Chummewali”, has landed in fresh controversy after an FIR was registered against her and her husband, Jinda Hans, over allegations of uploading obscene content and hurting religious sentiments through their social media videos.

The case was registered at Ludhiana’s Moti Nagar Police Station under Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act following a complaint by Nihang leader Manpreet Singh Khalsa. Police said the allegations mentioned in the complaint are under investigation and further action will depend on the outcome of the probe.

In his complaint, Manpreet Singh Khalsa alleged that the couple regularly posted objectionable videos containing vulgar language, suggestive visuals and content that could negatively influence children and society. He also accused them of using inappropriate gestures and making claims in videos that police officials had permitted them to create such content.

The complaint further alleged that some of the videos offended religious sentiments by depicting objectionable acts around a Shivling installed at the couple’s residence. It also accused the duo of making derogatory remarks against Nihang organisations and members of different religious communities. Police have not independently verified these allegations and said they form part of the ongoing investigation.

Soon after news of the FIR surfaced, Ranjit Kaur hit back through a video posted on social media. Rejecting the allegations, she claimed that she and her husband were being deliberately harassed and revealed that they had already submitted a complaint against Manpreet Singh Khalsa to the Ludhiana Police Commissioner.

The influencer further claimed that she possessed evidence against the complainant and would soon place it before the media. She alleged that additional evidence was still being collected and asserted that the truth would come out at the appropriate time.

The controversy comes days after a group of Nihangs led by Manpreet Singh Khalsa visited the influencer’s residence and objected to the content being shared on her social media platforms. The group had alleged that repeated requests to stop posting such videos had gone unanswered, leading to a confrontation outside her house.

Ranjit Kaur’s rise to online fame began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she started posting short comedy reels on social media. According to the influencer, the nickname “Bhabhi Chummewali” emerged after she blew a flying kiss to one of her followers in a video, prompting viewers to repeatedly use the phrase in the comments. She later adopted it as her online identity, helping her build a large digital following.

Her popularity eventually earned her a cameo appearance in Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh’s film Jatt & Juliet 3. She has often credited social media for transforming her from a content creator into a recognised entertainment personality.

Police said the investigation is continuing and that all allegations and counter-allegations made by both parties will be examined before any further legal action is taken.
