It is Nargis Dutt’s birth anniversary today. One of the most iconic actors of Hindi film industry, Nargis, born Fatima Rashid, starred in a number of commercially successful and critically acclaimed films, many of which featured her alongside actor Raj Kapoor.
Best known for the role of Radha, it was Nargis’ performance as a woman who struggles to single-handedly raise her sons, that immortalized Mother India and Nargis in cinema. Another role for which she was critically acclaimed for was of a woman with dissociate personality disorder. In Satyen Bose’s Raat Aur Din (1967), Nargis played a married woman with the psychological disorder. For her performance, the actor received a National Film Award for Best Actress.

In 1958, she became the first film actress to be conferred the Padma Shri (fourth highest civilian award) by the Government of India.
