Jon Hamm says Superman can be boring, villains are more fun
The 'Mad Men' star admitted that he tends to lean towards roles that explore the darker sides of human nature. "I don’t usually play the saint," he joked. "It’s usually the sinner."
Apple TV+ wanted an Emmy for Jon Hamm for his three-episode return as Paul Marks in The Morning Show Season 4. The studio filed him in the guest actor category, ignoring a 2025 rule.

Jon Hamm will not be eligible for the Emmy guest actor in a drama series category for his role in The Morning Show Season 4. A clerical error by Apple TV+ resulted in him being submitted in the wrong category. The Television Academy confirmed the disqualification on June 11, 2026, as Emmy nominations voting opened.
Hamm was submitted in the guest actor in a drama series category for his performance as Paul Marks in the show’s fourth season. He appears in only three episodes, fewer than half the season’s run.

Hamm was nominated as a supporting actor for The Morning Show in 2024, so he should have been submitted in that category this year for his three-episode return as billionaire Paul Marks. Instead, he was entered in the Best Drama Guest Actor race.

Gold Derby confirmed with a TV Academy spokesperson and with Apple TV that Hamm has been deemed ineligible for The Morning Show due to the category mix-up.
In January 2025, the Television Academy introduced a rule that any performer who has been nominated for or won a lead or supporting acting Emmy may no longer submit in the guest performer categories for the same role. The revision was designed to prevent actors from cycling through categories across seasons of the same show.
The rule change came about after The Crown’s Claire Foy won a guest-acting Emmy in 2021, and was nominated again in 2024, for blink-and-you-miss-them cameos.
Apple TV’s team overlooked the rule, as Hamm was nominated for supporting drama actor in 2024.
In 2024, Jon Hamm received Emmy nominations for both The Morning Show and FX’s Fargo. For The Morning Show, he played Elon Musk-esque tech billionaire Paul Marks across a full season arc. For Fargo, he played the villainous Sheriff Roy Tillman.
Hamm was nominated for best supporting actor in a drama series for The Morning Show, in addition to his nomination for best actor in a limited or anthology series for Fargo.
Billy Crudup ultimately won outstanding supporting actor in a drama series at the 2024 Emmys, beating out Hamm along with Mark Duplass, Jack Lowden, Jonathan Pryce, Tadanobu Asano, and Takehiro Hira.
The Morning Show Season 4 returned on September 17, 2025, set in spring 2024. Hamm’s Paul Marks returned for a limited arc within that season, appearing in just three of the season’s episodes.
The Morning Show disqualification does not remove Hamm from the 2026 Emmy ballot entirely. He remains on the Emmy ballot for Your Friends and Neighbors in Best Drama Actor and for Grimsburg in Best Character Voice-Over.
The lead drama actor field includes last year’s winner Noah Wyle from The Pitt, alongside Gary Oldman from Slow Horses, Sterling K. Brown from Paradise, Idris Elba from Hijack, Jon Hamm from Your Friends and Neighbors, Lee Jung-jae from Squid Game, Taron Egerton from Smoke, Charlie Cox from Daredevil: Born Again, and Michael C. Hall from Dexter: Resurrection.
The Television Academy’s guest-actor rule has affected other high-profile names beyond Hamm. Meryl Streep was nominated for supporting comedy actress for Season 3 of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and has been unable to submit in either Seasons 4 or 5, as she appears in less than 50% of both seasons.
The rule does have a noted exception. The rule does not affect Saturday Night Live guest submissions, such as Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell, who are former cast members nominated for Emmys during their tenure on the show. When SNL performers are entered for Emmy consideration, they are credited as playing various characters. However, official Emmy credits list the NBC sketch comedy’s hosts simply as host, a designation that creates ambiguity and is drawing scrutiny from competing strategists and studios.
Emmy campaigners had months to settle on their awards strategies, with May 7 being the submissions deadline. Nominations-round voting runs June 11 through June 22, and the nominations will be announced on July 8. Any contenders not put forward by networks or studios by that deadline could still self-submit.
The disqualification leaves The Morning Show without Hamm in contention for the 2026 Emmy cycle in any guest or supporting drama actor category. Jennifer Aniston is submitted in lead drama actress for The Morning Show. The show will still compete in other categories, but the submission error has cost the series a potential contender in the acting races.
The Television Academy has not indicated any mechanism to correct a submission error of this nature once the voting period has opened. Apple TV+ has not publicly commented beyond confirming the disqualification to Gold Derby and Variety.
