‘The Repair Shop’ first aired in 2017 and quickly became a much-loved series. It features a team of skilled craftspeople who restore old and sentimental items brought in by members of the public. The programme was a original daytime broadcast, but its growing popularity saw it move to primetime on BBC One.
In 2023, the show won a BAFTA award for a special episode featuring King Charles, then still the Prince of Wales, who brought in a clock and a vase to repair.
Beyond ‘The Repair Shop’, Blades has been on several other popular UK TV shows, including ‘Celebrity MasterChef’, ‘The Great Celebrity Bake Off’, and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. He also fronted a powerful BBC documentary, ‘Jay Blades: Learning to Read at 51’. There he opened up about his struggles with literacy and his journey to improve it later in life.
In recognition of his work, Blades got an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2021.
However, his personal life has recently come under legal scrutiny. Blades is also facing a separate charge of controlling and coercive behaviour involving his estranged wife. That case relates to alleged incidents that took place between January 2023 and September 2024. At a court hearing in October last year, Blades pleaded not guilty to that charge.
In light of the ongoing legal proceedings, Jay Blades stepped back from hosting ‘The Repair Shop’ in 2024.
