Woody and the gang have hit another milestone. ‘Toy Story 5’ has now earned more than $800 million worldwide, and the film shows no signs of slowing down.

After three weekends in theaters, the totals are in. The animated sequel has generated $381 million domestically and $427.3 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $808.6 million. That places the film among the biggest hits of the year. With this milestone, the movie is now the ninth highest-grossing Pixar release of all time, sitting behind Inside Out 2, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, Toy Story 3, Finding Dory, Finding Nemo, Inside Out, and Coco.

A record-setting opening

This success started on day one. “Toy Story 5” opened with $160 million from 4,425 North American theaters, the biggest domestic debut of the year and the largest opening in franchise history. Overseas, the film added $152 million in its first weekend, bringing its early worldwide haul to $312 million.

That opening beat every prior “Toy Story” launch by a wide margin. The previous franchise record for an opening weekend was $120 million, set by “Toy Story 4” in 2019. “Toy Story 5” arrived 31 years after the original film first hit theaters.

Chasing a billion dollars

The film is now on a clear path toward a major milestone. At its current pace, “Toy Story 5” is expected to pass $1 billion and eventually overtake 2019’s “Toy Story 4,” which earned $1.07 billion, as the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

It already ranks near the top of this year’s releases. The film is currently the third-biggest Hollywood release of the year, trailing only “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” at $1.009 billion and the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” at $991 million. Both of those films opened earlier in the year. Since their theatrical runs have mostly wound down, “Toy Story 5” is expected to pass them on the global charts.

Where it’s performing best

The film has found strong audiences around the world. Internationally, Mexico, the UK, China, France, and Australia have been the strongest territories for the movie. One major market is still waiting for its release. Germany does not get “Toy Story 5” until July 23, since Disney chose to delay the film there so that “Minions & Monsters” could have room to perform, given how popular the Minions franchise is in that country.

Domestically, the film has already climbed past several franchise benchmarks. With a domestic take that beat the final grosses of the first two “Toy Story” films, the movie sits third in the series behind “Toy Story 4” at $434 million and “Toy Story 3” at $415 million.

Budget and profitability

Making this film was not cheap. “Toy Story 5” carries a budget of $250 million. Even so, industry watchers say the investment has already paid off. The film has justified its price tag through its theatrical run alone, separate from the franchise’s other revenue streams. Even without new films in theaters, the “Toy Story” brand earns more than $1 billion each year in worldwide retail sales across consumer products, games, and publishing.
