Martin Scorsese is diving into the world of haunting mystery once again, this time with two of Hollywood’s biggest names leading the way. The Oscar-winning filmmaker will direct ‘What Happens at Night’. It is an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s acclaimed novel. The lead actors will be Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence playing the central couple, according to ‘Variety’.
The project is currently being set up by Apple Original Films in partnership with Studiocanal. They secured the rights to the book last year. Screenwriter Patrick Marber will work to adapt the story for the big screen.

At the heart of the tale is an American couple who travel to a remote, snow-covered European city in hopes of adopting a baby. Their journey is anything but ordinary. The wife, battling cancer, grows weaker by the day, while her husband fears her condition might make the adoption impossible.

Their stay at the eerily grand Borgarfjaroasysla Imperial Hotel only adds to the tension. With its endless bar and an odd mix of mysterious characters, including a flamboyant singer, a morally questionable businessman, and a strange healer, the couple soon realizes that nothing around them is what it seems.

As they push forward in their quest to become parents, they also face unsettling truths about their marriage and themselves.
The film marks Scorsese’s first time directing Jennifer Lawrence, although he recently worked with her as a producer on ‘Die My Love’. That movie, directed by Lynne Ramsay, earned Lawrence high praise at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. In addition, it has already sparked early Oscar talk ahead of its fall release.
For DiCaprio, this film is yet another addition to his packed schedule. He is also starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming drama ‘One Battle After Another’. It will open the prestigious Galas section at the Pingyao International Film Festival later this month. Based loosely on Thomas Pynchon’s novel ‘Vineland’, the film follows a group of former revolutionaries who reunite years later to confront a familiar foe. DiCaprio plays Bob Ferguson, with Regina Hall joining him in a key role.
Fans will remember that DiCaprio and Lawrence previously teamed up in 2021 for Adam McKay’s satirical hit ‘Don’t Look Up’. Their reunion under Scorsese’s direction adds extra buzz to this already high-profile project.
