Diego Borella, assistant director of ‘Emily in Paris’, dies on set in Venice

Diego Borella, who worked as an assistant director on the show ‘Emily in Paris’, has passed away at the age of 47.

Borella collapsed suddenly on Thursday evening while filming at Venice’s historic Hotel Danieli. Despite quick medical attention, attempts to revive him did not succeed. Reports suggest he may have suffered a sudden heart attack. He was pronounced dead around 7:30 p.m. local time.

Paramount Television Studios, which produces the series, confirmed the devastating news in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the ‘Emily in Paris’ production family,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Italian newspaper ‘La Repubblica’ described Borella as a respected professional who built his career across some of the world’s major cities, including Rome, New York, and London. Colleagues recall him as someone with both skill and passion.

Emergency services were on the scene within minutes. According to reports shared with ‘The Independent’, an ambulance arrived at 6:42 p.m., and medics worked for nearly an hour to revive him. However, their efforts were unsuccessful.

Following assistant director Borella’s passing, production for ‘Emily in Paris’ paused briefly as cast and crew processed the tragedy.

Filming resumed on Saturday.

The news came just days after Netflix had begun building anticipation for the show’s upcoming fifth season. Earlier this month, the streaming giant released first-look images, including a cheerful selfie of lead actress Lily Collins, who plays Emily Cooper. The post had signaled excitement and glamour ahead of the new season.

The fifth season of ‘Emily in Paris’ began filming in May and is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 18.
