Hollywood has lost one of its most vibrant talents. Diane Ladd has passed away at the age of 89. Her death was confirmed by her daughter, Laura Dern, who shared the news on Monday. This left fans around the world remembering the star’s remarkable career and indomitable spirit.
A three-time Academy Award nominee, Ladd earned her Oscar nods for wonderful films. They include ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’, ‘Wild at Heart’, and ‘Rambling Rose’. She also made memorable appearances in the 1973 action film ‘White Lightning’ and the 2011 HBO series ‘Enlightened’ where she often shared the screen with her daughter.

One of the most extraordinary achievements in Hollywood history came in 1991 with ‘Rambling Rose’. Ladd and Dern became the first and only mother-daughter duo ever to receive Oscar nominations for the same film in the same year.
Laura Dern, herself an Oscar-winning actress, has always spoken candidly about her mother’s fearless nature. In 2019, she described Diane Ladd as “the greatest actress, ever”. She added, “You don’t even use the word brave because she just shows up like that in life. She doesn’t care what anybody thinks. And she leads with a boundarylessness.”
Even in her later years, Ladd’s creativity never slowed. In 2023, she and Laura Dern released a joint memoir, ‘Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love’. The book drew from their daily walks and heartfelt conversations after Ladd was diagnosed with lung disease and it offered an intimate glimpse into their lives.
Laura Dern reflected at the time, “The more we talked and the deeper and more complicated subjects we shared, my mother got better and better and better. It has been a great gift.”
A trailblazer in her own right, Diane Ladd worked steadily into her 80s and married three times.
