About ‘The Odyssey’

‘The Odyssey’ is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem. Story follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, as he tries to return home after fall of Troy. The journey is long and filled with danger.

Matt Damon plays lead role of Odysseus. Tom Holland plays his son, Telemachus. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus’ wife. The cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

Nolan wrote and directed the film. Emma Thomas produced it alongside Nolan through their company Syncopy. Universal Pictures is distributing the film worldwide.

A technical milestone

‘The Odyssey’ holds a unique place in film history. It is the first feature film ever shot entirely using IMAX cameras. Nolan reportedly worked toward this goal for almost twenty years.

The filming took place across multiple international locations. This included stretches filmed on the open ocean. Reports indicate the production used over two million feet of film across ninety one days of shooting.

The technical achievement has been a major talking point in the film’s marketing. Industry voices have called it a landmark moment for large format cinema.

Nolan’s history with India

Nolan is not new to filming in the country. Portions of his 2020 film ‘Tenet’ were shot in Mumbai. He also filmed a sequence for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in Jodhpur years earlier.

Despite this history, none of his completed films have had an official premiere event in India until now.
