He had come to the city in search of a job in one of the many blue chip companies that abounded in and around Calcutta those days. He landed a job and when he was not hard at work became associated with English language theatre, late night parties, watching football in the Maidan. All the while he dreamed of a life in the big lane. His dreams turned into reality after a long trek and ever since Amitabh Bachchan has become a legend. Fantastic 50, an Amitabh Bachchan calendar, was released in Kolkata recently to mark his 50th year in films.

On 15 February, 1969, Amitabh Bachchan signed his debut film that was released on 7 November the same year. To mark the occasion, Kaushik Events, The Dreamers Music PR Agency and Wisdom Tree, a recently opened cafe, released a special calendar last week. Called Fantastic 50, the calendar is a collection of posters of Amitabh Bachchan by Sudipta Chanda.

The effort seems to have been noticed by the megastar. “Overwhelmed..! Thank you,” Bachchan wrote to Chanda, according to a post shared by the latter on Facebook.

Sudipta Chanda is a noted poster collector. He even hosted an exhibition, Bachchan Nama, to celebrate the actor’s 75th birthday last year. Nearly 50 original posters of Amitabh Bachchan films were on display.

Fantastic 50 has posters of popular films such as Sholay, Shaan, Don, Zanjeer, Deewar, Majboor, Coolie, and also some lesser known movies such as Sanjog, Bandhe Haath, Adalat, and Kasauti in different sizes.

A few days ago, Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his Twitter handle: “49 years ago I came to the city of dreams and signed my first film .. “Saat Hindustani’ on Feb 15, 1969 .. .”

Since then, there has been several milestones of his career, a combination of hard work, discipline and as the tall dark and not so young man famously said “luck” while breaking out of one image after another. The calendar features fifty odd posters of Big B films. Each page in the calendar month carries three posters while it’s cover showcases fourteen posters, altogether fifty posters to celebrate his fifty years of journey in industry.
