Ratan Thiyam, one of India’s most revered theatre directors and playwrights, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday at the age of 77, following a prolonged illness.
He breathed his last at 1:30 am at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that redefined the contours of modern Indian theatre.

A pioneer in blending traditional Manipuri performance styles with contemporary stagecraft, Thiyam was a recipient of the Padma Shri in 1989 and numerous other national and international accolades.
Over several decades, he transformed the theatre landscape with his visionary direction, innovative staging, and deeply philosophical themes drawn from ancient texts, folklore, and pressing political realities.
His death has sent ripples through the artistic and academic communities, with tributes pouring in from admirers worldwide. Many hailed him as an irreplaceable figure whose work placed Manipuri theatre on the global cultural map.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his grief on social media, stating:
“It is with deep sorrow that I express my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Shri Ratan Thiyam, a true luminary of Indian theatre and an esteemed son of Manipur. His unwavering dedication to his craft, his vision, and his love for Manipuri culture enriched not only the world of theatre but also our very identity. His work carried the soul of Manipur, echoing its stories, its struggles, and its beauty. May his soul rest in peace and his spirit continue to live on in the works he leaves behind and in the countless lives he inspired.”
