Seventeen years after “All Izz Well” became a cultural anthem, the sequel to 3 Idiots is officially in the works. Director Rajkumar Hirani has spoken openly about the project. Aamir Khan has confirmed the story. And the original cast is expected to return. Here is a full breakdown of what is known so far.
Hirani opens up about the script
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Rajkumar Hirani confirmed that he and his longtime writing partner Abhijat Joshi are currently developing the story and script for the sequel. Hirani said there is “a lot of work left” on the project. He described the core idea as picking up the three lead characters 15 to 20 years after the events of the original film. “They are married and have children now. They are experiencing mid-life crisis,” he said. The sequel will not revisit the college setting. The characters have moved on, and so has the world around them.

Hirani also confirmed that the sequel will carry a big message, just like the original did. He said the story is “unusual” and retains the same humour as the first film. He did not provide a release date or a confirmed shoot schedule.
Aamir Khan confirms he has heard the story
Aamir Khan confirmed the sequel separately in an interview with Amar Ujala in April 2026. He said he has already heard the story from Hirani and Joshi. “Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story, and it’s wonderful,” Khan said. “The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film.”
Khan also confirmed his excitement about reprising the role of Phunsukh Wangdu. “It’s a beautiful story conceptualised by Raju and Abhijat. I am excited about this movie and once again getting an opportunity to portray Phunsukh Wangdu,” he said.
The original cast might return
According to reports, the sequel will bring back Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi. The film will be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with Vidhu Vinod Chopra producing alongside Hirani and Aamir Khan.
Whether supporting cast members like Boman Irani, Mona Singh, and Jaaved Jaaferi will return remains unclear. No official announcement has been made about their involvement.
The Working Title Is ‘4 Idiots’
The script is currently being developed under a tentative working title, “4 Idiots.” The title is subject to change. The makers are also reportedly looking for a new lead to expand the franchise beyond the original trio. No casting announcement has been made for this fourth character.
The Dadasaheb Phalke biopic has been put on hold
Hirani and Aamir Khan were earlier set to collaborate on a biopic about cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke. That project has now been put on hold due to scripting issues. The 3 Idiots sequel appears to have taken priority for both filmmakers.
What made the original a landmark film
3 Idiots released on December 24, 2009. It was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and had a budget of Rs 55 crore. The film went on to earn Rs 400.61 crore at the box office.
It made history as the first Indian film to enter the Rs 200-crore club. The film starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani. It was co-written by Hirani and Joshi. It was a loose adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘Five Point Someone’.
Film’s central message was about following your passion over societal pressure. It sparked a nationwide conversation about the Indian education system. Its dialogue, songs, and characters became part of everyday pop culture in India and beyond.
Shoot likely in second half of 2026
Industry sources have indicated that the sequel could go on floors in the second half of 2026. An insider said the team “feels the magic of the first film has returned.” However, Hirani himself has not officially confirmed any shoot dates. The script is still being worked on.
