In a candid revelation, Bollywood actress Mrunal Thakur recently shared the challenges she faces in securing romantic roles in Hindi cinema, attributing it to her perception of not being ‘popular enough.’ Despite earning widespread recognition for her versatile performances and effortlessly portraying romantic characters on-screen, Thakur expressed her frustration in a recent interview.
When asked about her willingness to take on a romantic role in Bollywood, the actress candidly responded, “I don’t know, I am not popular enough to get a love story yet.” Elaborating on her stance, she remarked, “Am I wrong? I have to be popular to get a love story, no? There are a lot of films in offer, but definitely not romantic movies. I would love to do that.”

Thakur went on to reveal her weariness of constantly proving herself to filmmakers. She stated, “I’m just tired of proving to filmmakers now. I just want it to happen organically; I am done asking them.” Despite the challenges, she expressed her genuine desire to explore romantic roles on the big screen.

Reflecting on her past projects, Thakur highlighted the positive feedback she received from fans. They thanked her for ‘bringing romance back’ to the cinema. She acknowledged the universal appeal of romantic films, saying, “We all grew up watching romantic movies, and suddenly there were no films in the genre. Everyone pretends they don’t like romance, but everyone watches it secretly.”
The actress expressed her satisfaction with the outcomes of her recent films, “Hi Nanna” and “Sita Ramam,” emphasizing her hope to continue creating magic in the romance genre, potentially in another language. Overwhelmed, Thakur’s fans dubbed her the ‘queen of romance,’ drawing a parallel with the legendary Shah Rukh Khan, often referred to as the ‘king of romance.’
In light of her genuine passion for romantic cinema, Mrunal Thakur remains optimistic about the future. She hopes for opportunities to come her way organically without the need for constant validation.
