Back in 2014, ‘2 States’ came about as a sweet love story with the fresh pairing of Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. The film produced by Dharma Productions and based on Chetan Bhagat’s best-selling novel became a runaway hit especially among young movie lovers. But did you know the author himself wasn’t sure about the casting at first because it was likely to rope Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in? Yes, that’s right.
In a recent chat with Pinkvilla, Chetan Bhagat revealed a surprising piece of Bollywood history. He shared that before Arjun and Alia came on board, the makers had bigger stars in mind. This included none other than Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra.

“Shah Rukh Khan was being considered. Priyanka Chopra’s name was also discussed,” Bhagat recalled. He added that there was even a time when filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj was supposed to direct the movie. “There were many news articles and rumours about who would play the lead roles,” he said.
Bhagat confessed that he wasn’t convinced when he first heard that two newcomers Arjun, who had only acted in ‘Ishaqzaade’, and Alia, fresh from her debut in ‘Student of the Year’ had been finalised for the film.
“When they told me it’s a new director and the leads are Arjun and Alia, I wasn’t sure. This was not what we had discussed earlier,” he explained. “But their freshness and young energy made the film beautiful. It was perfect casting in the end.”
‘2 States’, directed by Abhishek Varman, follows the journey of Krish and Ananya, a Punjabi boy and a Tamil Brahmin girl, who fall in love and struggle to convince their families to accept their relationship.
Arjun Kapoor last appeared in ‘Mere Husband Ki Biwi’ which failed to leave a mark at the box office. Before that, he played a negative role in ‘Singham Again’. Alia Bhatt, who has grown into one of Bollywood’s top actresses since ‘2 States’, recently appeared in ‘Jigra’. However, the film didn’t perform as expected either. She is currently busy shooting her next action drama, ‘Alpha’,
