Anirban Chakrabarti brings Eken Babu to life: ‘He looks ordinary but thinks like a genius’

Fans of detective shows, take note! The beloved Bengali sleuth, Eken Babu, is now charming audiences in Hindi-dubbed episodes on Sony SAB. And bringing this quirky yet brilliant character to life is actor Anirban Chakrabarti.

Eken Babu isn’t your typical mysterious brooding detective. According to Anirban, that’s exactly what makes him special. “He’s a common man with uncommon intelligence,” the actor shares. “He may seem ordinary at first glance, but beneath that simplicity is a razor-sharp mind.”

It’s this unusual combination of normalcy and brilliance that has made Eken Babu a timeless favorite. “People connect with him because he feels like someone they could meet on the street. Someone their family might even underestimate… until he cracks a case in the most unexpected way,” Anirban explains.

Unlike many TV detectives who stride into a scene radiating authority or intimidation, Eken Babu takes a different approach. “He doesn’t scare anyone. He disarms them,” Anirban points out. The detective’s methods may seem almost childlike or unpolished, but that’s their genius. Coupled with a natural sense of humor, his approach makes him both entertaining and effective. “He never tries to ‘look’ like a detective. That’s what makes him so refreshingly unique,” the actor adds.

Anirban admits that stepping into Eken Babu’s shoes has influenced him in unexpected ways. “I’ve picked up some of his habits over the years,” he says. “Observing tiny details quietly, understanding people, noticing their little quirks—it’s something I do now too. And of course, like Eken, I love food!”

But for Anirban, the most significant trait he shares with his character is curiosity. “Like Eken, I love studying people, understanding their stories and behaviour. That curiosity not only helps me as an actor but also makes life much more interesting,” he explains.
