Actor Vijay’s wife files for divorce, cites extramarital affair with an actress

In a setback for actor Vijay, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has filed for divorce, citing an alleged continuing extramarital affair with a leading actress.

Living separately from Vijay, she has filed the divorce petition before the Chengalpattu District Court, seeking annulment of the marriage under Sections 27(1) (a), (b), (d) read with Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act (1954). Citing his alleged infidelity, she has sought a divorce.

Keeping a low profile, Sangeetha, of Sri Lankan Tamil lineage, has been living in the UK with her two children — Jason Sanjay (25) and Divya Saasha (20) — while Vijay lives alone in Chennai.

Though filed on December 3, 2025, the petition copy was made available to the media only on Friday (Feb 27, 2026), raising questions about its timing. Hearing in the case is expected to be taken up on April 20, and the court has directed Vijay to appear in person.

The petition stated that her marriage with Vijay was first registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, followed by a grand ceremony according to Hindu customs and rituals in Chennai on August 25 of the following year. Sangeetha (48) further submitted that during the initial years after wedlock, their married life was cordial.

In the petition, Sangeetha submitted that she discovered Vijay’s adulterous relationship with an actress in April 2021, which caused her mental agony at the betrayal of marital trust. “Though Vijay initially assured to end the relationship with the actress, he continued with the adulterous association without remorse, subjecting me to prolonged mental cruelty,” she said, adding that the attempts to resolve the issue amicably in September 2021 and February 2022 proved futile and were deferred in view of the education and emotional well-being of the children. Thereafter, Vijay neglected her emotionally and deliberately distanced himself from conjugal relations, she charged.

Besides seeking dissolution of marriage, she has sought a direction to stay at her matrimonial home until the final disposal of the plea and a fair and reasonable permanent alimony, commensurate with Vijay’s income and social standing.

In order to protect the personal reputation of all parties involved, the petition said she is refraining from disclosing the identity of the actress at present.
