Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Akali Dal alliance candidate from Gurdaspur and film actor Sunny Deol, on Monday, narrowly escaped an accident as one of the tyres of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) he was travelling on burst in the middle of the road following which several vehicles in the convoy crashed into each other.

According to the police, no one was injured. The incident occurred on the Amritsar-Gurdaspur National Highway, police added.

Sixty-two-year-old Deol, who was on his way for a roadshow, left in another vehicle.

Deol, son of veteran actor Dharmendra, had joined the BJP in April after BJP President Amit Shah had a meeting with him. Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Nirmala Sitharaman were present when he joined the BJP.

BJP had fielded actor Vinod Khanna from the Gurdaspur seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections who had emerged victorious. Khanna had died in 2017.

Speaking on his political debut, Deol said just like his father Dharmendra worked with late former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he will work with and support Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has inspired him to take the political plunge.

Punjab will vote in a single phase, on May 19, the last day of the seven-phased Lok Sabha elections.

Interestingly, Dharmendra, on Sunday, had said that he would not have allowed Sunny to contest the Lok Sabha elections had he known that Congress’s Sunil Jakhar was his opponent from Punjab’s Gurdaspur.

“Balram Jakhar was like my brother. Had I known his son Sunil Jakhar was contesting from Gurdaspur, I would have not allowed Sunny (to contest against him),” the actor-turned-politician was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
