“We received a complaint from Damini, 28, who runs a medical store in Noida,” said Prasant Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara).
The victim, in her statement, said she came in contact with the accused at a family wedding where he introduced himself as a lieutenant in the Indian Army’s elite Para Commando unit. “He was dressed in uniform and equipped with a fake Army ID card and eventually won her trust over multiple meetings,” she alleged in her complaint.
Continuing her statement, Damini said over a period of time, he allegedly took Rs 70,000 from her in cash and online transfers on several pretexts.
The officer said that, growing suspicious about his identity, she informed the police when the accused went to meet her on Monday.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS at the Farsh Bazar police station and the investigation has been taken up in the case by a team.
During interrogation, the accused, who was arrested on the same day, admitted to have failed the NDA exam but pretended to be selected.
“Using an NDA rank list found online with the name, he convinced even his parents of his fake Army credentials and left home under the pretext of joining NDA training in Khadakwasla. He was living in Kanpur doing odd jobs before meeting Damini,” the officer said.
The DCP said, “Our team has seized a fake Army ID card, an Army uniform, and forged documents from his possession. Further investigation is underway to determine if others were similarly duped.”
Further investigation into this case is underway by the officer, DCP Gautam stated.
