The Uttarakhand police detained a Spanish trekking group for illegally using a satellite phone during their expedition in the state. The group reached Uttarkashi on Sunday, after failing to complete their trek, and local administration had to struggle for obtaining information due to language problem.

Charging the group of not supporting the police, the district administration dispatched a letter to the Spanish Embassy in India.

The mystery has deepened as the police failed to recover the satellite phone from the possession of the foreign trekking group. The group had made call through Thuraya satellite phone. The local intelligence unit received this information through central agency. The information created panic.

As the Spanish group reached Uttarkashi on Sunday, the local administration and police jumped into action.

The members of the group have been identified as George, Georgia, John and Alphonso. The group began their expedition for Sathopanth last week. It is said that the Spanish tourists failed to complete the expedition due to poor health of some members.

As the foreign tourists were taken to the Kotwali, the local administration had to face big challenge. The trekkers were fluent in Spanish, but their English was weak. As the media reached the police station the trekkers got agitated and stopped them from taking photographs. Uttarkashi district magistrate Ashish Chauhan and Superintendent of Police DP Singh interrogated the group members.
