The Statesman has been closely connected with Siliguri — the gateway to the North Eastern states and three neighbouring countries — ever since it established its unit here over 25 years ago. Since then, the English daily has been recognising local Durga Puja Committees through its annual Sharod Samman. This year was no exception, as The Statesman honoured five Puja Committees under specific categories with Sharod Samman 2025.

Upholding its motto, “People’s Parliament, Always in Session,” The Statesman presented awards to Jatiya Tarun Sangha (J.T.S), Ashram Para for Best Lighting; Central Colony Durga Puja Committee, New Jalpaiguri for Best Safety Measures; Rabindra Sangha, Siliguri for Best Theme; Dada Bhai Sporting Club, Deshbandhu Para for Best Idol; and Shaktigarh Ujjal Sangha for Best Pandal.

To honour these five Puja Committees, several organisations extended strong support to The Statesman. Siliguri Branch expressed gratitude to all 13 organisations and their proprietors for their valuable contributions.

DHITM (Darjeeling Hill Institute of Technology and Management) served as the title sponsor, with support from Pragati College of Education, NHPC, DPMI (Delhi Paramedical & Management Institute), Nobel’s Academy, Bright Academy, 9 to 10, Rotarian Ravindra Kumar Jain, Avision, Summit Hotels, Darjeeling Public School, Dwarika, and SKPVN (Sri Krishna Pranami Vidya Niketan).

These organisations have long been contributing to Siliguri’s social and economic development. While DHITM has established its own institution, NHPC has supported regional initiatives under its CSR projects. Educational institutions such as DPMI, Nobel’s Academy, Bright Academy, Darjeeling Public School, Avision, and SKPVN continue to play a vital role in the field of education.

Rotarian Ravindra Kumar Jain, a noted philanthropist, has been working tirelessly for social causes in Siliguri. Summit Hotels has helped develop tourism in the region by setting up a chain of hotels, including in Sikkim. Dwarika has become a prominent name in Siliguri’s real estate sector by providing homes and shelters, while “9 to 10,” a departmental store, fulfils the everyday needs of local residents.
