In a move aimed at boosting regional connectivity, tourism, and strategic preparedness, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has formally requested Union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, to upgrade the Matigara–Garidhura–Mirik section of state highway 12 (SH-12) in West Bengal to a National Highway.
This particular stretch, which begins at Matigara in the plains of Siliguri and winds its way up to the Hill town of Mirik via Garidhura, plays a vital role in linking the foothills with the higher reaches of Darjeeling district. The route is not only a key lifeline for locals and tourists alike but also serves as an important alternative to the heavily congested Hill Cart Road (NH-110) that connects Siliguri to Darjeeling town.

Bista highlighted that this road serves as a major gateway to the Darjeeling Hills and also forms a critical link along the Indo-Nepal border. The road provides direct access to Mirik, a popular hill destination known for its scenic lake, tea gardens, and orange orchards, drawing thousands of tourists every year.

The MP pointed out that the present infrastructure along this stretch is inadequate to support the increasing volume of traffic, especially during the tourist season. Upgrading it to National Highway standards would reduce travel time, improve safety, and ensure year-round connectivity even during adverse weather conditions.
The MP also underscored the strategic importance of the road, given its proximity to the Indo-Nepal border. With cross-border trade and people-to-people exchanges on the rise, better road infrastructure in the border zone will not only support economic activity but also contribute to national security and regional cooperation.
