Senior Congress MLA Kuldeep Singh Pathania (65) from Bhatiyat Assembly constituency has been unanimously elected as the 18th Speaker of the 14th Legislative Assembly of Himachal Pradesh.

Ending suspense over the speaker’s post on Wednesday, five-time MLA Pathania had filed his nominations on the first day of the assembly session, for the post at Tapovan in Dharamshala.

Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, outgoing Assembly Speaker and MLA Vipin Singh Parmar and State Congress President Pratibha Singh were present on the occasion of his nomination.

The BJP led by Leader of Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur also endorsed his name, facilitating smooth election.

Pathania had been elected as an MLA in 1985, 2007 and now in 2022 on Congress ticket, however in 1993 and 2003 was elected as an independent.
