A man has been detained in connection with the killing of a 13-year-old girl in a village in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district.

The incident took place on February 21 when the girl left her home around 12:15 pm to walk to a nearby examination centre for her Class 8 board examination. When she failed to reach the school, authorities informed her family at around 1:46 pm, raising alarm in the village.

A search operation was launched soon after, and her body was later discovered a short distance away from the village.

Superintendent of Police Kavendra Singh Sagar said police made progress after three days of continuous investigation when a CCTV footage from nearby areas captured a man entering and leaving the locality around the same time the girl went missing.

The suspect initially tried to mislead investigators about his movements but later confessed during questioning to strangling the girl, police said.

Authorities have not ruled out sexual assault. Officials said confirmation will depend on the post-mortem report, which is being conducted following legal procedures along with a medical examination.

Meanwhile, anger has spread among villagers and the victim’s family members, who have staged protests demanding strict punishment and compensation. Their protest delayed the post-mortem examination for some time. The case was also raised in the Rajasthan Assembly, where opposition leaders demanded stronger steps to prevent crimes against minors.
