Crop loss due to moisture stress and pest attack has taken a toll on farmers in parts of Kalahandi district. Yet another farmer of Nagupada village attempted suicide on Friday.

The 65-year-old farmer, Krupa Naik, was admitted to the Bhawanipatna government hospital and subsequently shifted to the VSS Medical College Hospital, Burla. He told media persons that he had grown paddy and another crop in 4 acres and it failed due to long dry spells. He was dejected and had consumed pesticide to end his life.

It may be noted here there has been widespread crop failure in Jaipatna and Koksara block areas of Kalahandi district.

Naik is the third recent case of attempted suicide by farmers in the district. On 2 October a farmer, Sudarsan Majhi of Tunagaon village and on 25 October, Paramananda Lahajal of Gambhariguda village had attempted suicide.

In both the instances, the administration had conducted an inquiry.
