Joy Mukherjee, the popular Bengali actor who was arrested on charges of assaulting actress Sayantika Banerjee, had allegedly abused the actress in the past. The actor, who was granted bail on 7 July following an incident at Southern Avenue, had also allegedly harassed Sayantika’s parents.

Sayantika claimed that Joy, with whom she had been in a relationship for eight years, had gone to her parent’s house in Salt Lake a few months ago and insulted her mother while she was alone at home.

“I often wanted to talk things out and address the issues plaguing us. But he was never ready to listen,” she told The Times of India adding that she blocked Joy’s number.

Sayantika recalled that two months ago Joy arrived at her apartment on the pretext of taking back his belongings even though “he had given in writing that he had nothing left to claim”.

She revealed that in spite of all the harassment at the hands of the actor, she never lodged a complaint. Reports say that her family tried to make Joy realise his mistake but to no avail.

On Friday, Sayantika filed the police complaint against Joy at the insistence of her father. In her complaint, the actress said that Joy’s vehicle overtook her while she was on her way back from a gym in Southern Avenue.

The actor allegedly tried to pull the actress out of her vehicle and physically assaulted her. Sayantika said that when one of her attendants tried to intervene, Joy assaulted him as well.

The incident happened at 12.30 pm in the posh locality near Rabindra Sarovar Lake.

“The crowd swelled at the busy junction and I had to call my father. In the evening, I was left with no other option but to lodge a complaint against him at Tollygunge police station,” Sayantika told the TOI.

A case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 279, 341, 323 dealing with rash driving, wrongful restraint and voluntarily causing hurt was registered against Joy following which the police arrested him from his south Kolkata residence.

Joy was later granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 500 by a court in Alipore.
