A man lost his life while three others sustained critical injuries after falling into an open sewer during a cleaning operation in Ashok Vihar’s Phase-II on Monday night, the Delhi Police said on Wednesday.

According to the police, a PCR call was received at 11:36 PM on Tuesday reporting that four individuals had fallen into a sewer near Harihar Apartments. The victims were cleaning the sewer, which had allegedly been carried out by Brijgopal Construction Company.

“All four were rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where one of them, identified as Arvind (40), a resident of Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, was declared brought dead,” a senior officer said.

The other three, Sonu and Narayana, both also from Kasganj, along with Naresh, who is from Bihar, were admitted to the ICU in critical condition, the officer said.

As part of the investigation, the crime team, along with the forensic experts, was called to the crime scene to conduct an inspection of the site and collect evidence.

Police said the initial inquiry suggested no safety equipment had been provided to the workers.

“We have registered a case under Sections 106(1), 289, and 337 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Sections 07 and 09 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013,” said a senior official from the Ashok Vihar police station.

The manager of the construction company has been summoned for questioning, he added.

Investigation into the case is underway.
