A day after two sand quarry workers sustained bullet injuries near the Dahijuri CIF camp in West Bengal’s Jhargram district, one victim alleged that three armed men deliberately ambushed them, opening fire from behind after briefly questioning their identities.
Meanwhile, police maintain the incident appears to be accidental firing and have launched a detailed probe into the circumstances.

The victims, Amit Mondal and Shubhadip Ghosh, both 25-year-old residents of Birbhum district and employees of a sand quarry under the Lalgarh police station area, remain under treatment at Jhargram Medical College and Hospital.

Shubhadip sustained bullet injuries to his back and left leg, while Amit suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg.
The victims claimed that they were travelling on a motorcycle towards Jhargram town on Sunday night when they noticed a flower bouquet lying on the road near the Dahijuri CIF camp under Binpur police station limits. As they stopped, three armed men allegedly surrounded them.
“We stopped after noticing a bouquet lying on the road. As I got down to pick it up, three men carrying firearms surrounded us. They asked for our names and identities and then told us to leave. As soon as we started the motorcycle, they fired repeatedly from behind. I was hit in my leg, while Shubhadip was shot in the back and leg. We have no idea why we were attacked,” Amit claimed, speaking from his hospital bed.
Fellow quarry workers rescued the injured and took them to Jhargram Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
In an official statement, the district police said the firing near the Dahijuri CIF camp was suspected to be accidental and that they are thoroughly investigating all aspects of the incident to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
