The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in West Bengal’s industrial town Durgapur has introduced scenes from the Ramayana in the Rath Yatra festival this year.
The religious organisation has presented scenes from Lord Rama’s life, his family as well as sage Viswamitra across dedicated pavilions, in the mega event, for devotees as well as visitors.

According to the organisers, the exhibition has tried to portray deities of the lead Ramayana characters and the key episodes of the epic, including Lord Rama’s childhood, his journey with Sage Vishwamitra, episodes like Sita Swayamvara, 14 years of exile, Sita’s abduction, Hanuman’s Lanka expedition, Ravana’s defeat, and Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya.
ISKCON’s chief servitor in Durgapur, Awdhurya Chandra Das said, “Our aim is to present Lord Rama’s ideals of sacrifice, truth and dharma to the new generation through light installations, artwork and a live tableau.”
“Visitors will not just see but also experience the message of Ramayana,” he added.
The temporary ‘Masir Bari’ of Lord Jagannatha, a replica modelled on Gundicha Temple in Puri, a Jain temple of Rajasthan has also been set up at Akbar Ground in Durgapur.
ISKON has been organising a separate Ratha Yatra at Durgapur’s Akbar Road football ground in A-Zone for the last 11 years, apart from the one held at the town’s Chitraalaya Mela Ground in the B-Zone area, where the festival has been held for the last 60 years.
Naba Das of the India Tribal Care Trust in ISKCON is the key architect behind blending Ramayana with the chariot festival. Das believes that the new initiative will inspire children to connect with Indian heritage and values during the festival.
