West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and state Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta paid floral tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s statue on the latter’s death anniversary on Tuesday.

“Today is ‘Balidan Diwas’. Everyone is aware of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s contributions. He was a nationalist and was instrumental in the very creation of West Bengal. That is why the Prime Minister spoke in detail about him on Statehood Day,” the Chief Minister said speaking to ANI.

Adhikari also mentioned that “it remains a mystery even today” how Mookerjee, considered to be the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s parent organisation, died.

“It is because of his (Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s) contribution that Kashmir is today a part of the country,” Adhikari stressed.

Adhikari also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fulfilling Mookerjee’s vision of abrogating Article 370 and thereby bringing Jammu and Kashmir close to Centre’s governance.

“We are grateful to PM Modi for fulfilling his vision of ‘One Nation, One Constitution, One Flag’, removing Articles 375 and 35A from the Constitution,” the Chief Minister said.

The newly-elected Bengal Chief Minister also mentioned his contribution towards the creation of the eastern state.

“Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s dream for West Bengal, and the homeland he created for Bengali Hindus by saving West Bengal from going to Pakistan,” he mentioned.

Mentioning that the state government will function under the ideals laid down by Mookerjee, Adhikari said, “This government will function under his guidance and adhere to his policies and ideals; today, the entire nation is observing this day as ‘Balidan Diwas’.”

Speaking about the event at Keoratola Mahasashan on Mookerjee’s death anniversary, the Chief Minister said, “For the first time since Independence, the West Bengal government, specifically the Information and Cultural Affairs Ministry and the Kolkata Corporation, has organised this event.”

On the alleged incidents of ink being smeared on Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s statue during the Trinamool Congress regime, Adhikari said, “The people have given a befitting reply. In our democracy, the people have the final say. The people have answered and taught her (Mamata Banerjee) a lesson. I do not need to say anything more about this.”
