West Bengal’s Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Agnimitra Paul on Friday said that the government is working on plans to adopt technologies developed by the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) to modernise waste management across municipalities across the state.
During her visit to CMERI in Durgapur, Paul said the government is planning to use technologies that can convert plastic waste into fuel, organic waste into compost, dry leaves into alternative fuel, and construction debris into low-cost bricks.

The state Minister said the government would provide land, while CMERI would offer technical expertise. She said that modern waste processing centres would treat waste accumulated over the years using these technologies.
She pointed out that the process would reduce environmental pollution as well as create opportunities for generating revenue.
In an attack at the Trinamool Congress, Paul said that the previous regime had failed to give adequate importance to research and technology developed by the Centre. She even claimed that people were misguided to think that the Centre was neglecting West Bengal.
Pointing out the improved coordination between the Centre and the state, the Minister said, “People now understand why we had always wanted a double-engine government.”
She informed that the state Urban Development Department has sent a formal letter to CMERI and plans to use the institute’s technological expertise for solid waste management projects across various parts of the state.
