A history-sheeter was brutally hacked to death in a horrific daylight attack on a busy road in Bengaluru’s JP Nagar, with armed assailants allegedly chasing and attacking him near IG Circle. However, the case took a shocking turn after CCTV footage surfaced, allegedly showing two police personnel witnessing the assault from close range and leaving the spot without intervening.

The footage, which has gone viral on social media, has raised serious questions over the police response. Authorities are examining the video’s authenticity, while senior officers are looking into the conduct of the personnel. The victim, identified as Raju alias Halmurka, was attacked by a group of men in an alleged gang rivalry incident. He was rushed to a private hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The two personnel are seen slowing down and watching the assault from close range. The attackers later move towards a waiting vehicle, following which the police personnel allegedly leave the spot without attempting to stop them, help the victim, or alert nearby units.

Senior officers said the conduct of the personnel is under scrutiny and efforts are underway to identify them for possible departmental action. The authenticity of the video is also being verified.

Attack caught on camera

Police said the attackers arrived in a yellow-board car, intercepted Raju and repeatedly assaulted him with machetes even after he fell. The assailants then fled from the spot in the same vehicle.

Eyewitnesses watched the attack in fear. Raju was rushed to a private hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Police suspect the killing was a planned attack linked to gang rivalry.

Revenge angle under probe

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Division) Kona Vamsi Krishna has formed three special teams to trace and arrest those involved.

Preliminary findings suggest the murder may be connected to a retaliatory attack linked to a homicide allegedly committed by Raju nearly a decade ago in Banashankari. Investigators are examining past rivalries and criminal networks to establish the sequence of events.

Police said that although Raju had a criminal history involving murder, attempt to murder and robbery cases, no fresh cases had been registered against him in recent years.

The teams are also probing possible links to associates of a rowdy known as “Stand Kutti”.

Raju alias Halmurka was also an accused in the Subramanyapura double murder case, among other cases. Police suspect the killing was a result of a long-standing rivalry and said searches are underway to arrest the accused.
