Four people were killed and many were left injured in an explosion in a junk shop in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar on Monday.

Four people were killed and many were left injured in an explosion in a junk shop in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar on Monday.

The shop where the explosion happened is located in Sarvat Road area of the city. The incident took place at 9.40 am. Reports say that splinters hit at least two passersby who were killed immediately.

Two of the deceased have been identified as Tazim and Shazad, both in their 50s. The injured have been identified as Yusuf, Nawajish, Naushad, Shoaib and Kaiser Begum.

The cause of the explosion is not known but Indian Army’s explosive detection unit and the UP police’s anti-terror squad have been contacted for assistance.

“Teams from the Army’s explosive unit and that of the police’s Anti terror squad are coming in. They will determine what caused the explosion and the circumstances. But the explosion was a powerful one,” said Anant Dev, Muzaffarnagar’s Senior Superintendent of Police.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the owner of the junk shop was hammering a pointed object when the explosion occurred.

Police personnel and a fire brigade rushed to the spot and began rescue operations after receiving information about the incident.
