Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Devender Yadav has demanded urgent compensation for farmers across nearly 50 villages in the national capital whose crops were extensively damaged after floodwaters submerged thousands of acres of farmland. Highlighting the dire financial strain on affected farmers, many of whom had taken loans to cultivate their fields, he called on the government to provide compensation of Rs 1,00,000 per acre to help them recover from the crisis.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Yadav said that the farmers of Delhi “Dilli Dehat” had supported the BJP during the Delhi Assembly elections, but the Rekha Gupta government has neglected the plight of the farmers who have been wrecked by the monsoon rains.

“Along with the poor people living in the flood plains of the Yamuna river, the farmers have also become victims of the flood fury. The Delhi government woke up to the grim reality of floods mostly on account of the large volume of water released from the Hathnikund Barrage spilled over the Yamuna, along with incessant rains, to cause heavy damage in the low lying areas and the farm lands,” he said.

Devender Yadav recalled that during the Congress government’s tenure, farmers received prompt financial relief ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 per acre whenever crops were damaged due to rains, floods, or hailstorms. He alleged that for over 11 years, the Kejriwal-led AAP government had completely neglected the plight of farmers, and now the current Rekha Gupta-led BJP government was following the same path.

Accusing both the parties of anti-farmer attitude, Yadav said the present administration’s silence on the heavy crop losses exposed its apathy. He further pointed out that the AAP was the first to endorse the Modi government’s controversial three farm laws, yet failed to extend any help when farmers suffered massive crop damages.

He further highlighted that farm lands in around 50 villages of Delhi, including Palla, Hiranki, Bhaktawarpur, Songarpur, Tijipur, Jagatpur and Burari are underwater to cause uncertainty among thousands of villagers who were solely dependent on their farm produce for their livelihood. “But neither any Delhi Minister, nor officials from the Delhi Government have visited them to assess the damage, and offer immediate financial relief for them to recover their losses,” he added.
