With the maximum temperature on Thursday recording seven points below normal for the season residents of Delhi experienced rare freezing cold.

According to the weatherman, the city’s maximum temperature was recorded at 12.5 degrees Celsius, a good seven notches below season’s average while calm winds made the cold giving the bones a chill.

Besides extreme cold, the national capital witnessed shallow fog and haze throughout the day while sun was found missing in the hazy conditions, further amplifying the cold, especially during the morning hours when the minimum temperature was pegged at 7.7 degrees Celsius.

Many homeless people who could not reach out to the night shelters and sheds, tried to keep themselves warm with bonfires. People were seen wearing monkey caps while many others covered their heads with scarves and mufflers as chilly wind towards the evening made the conditions worse.

As per the weather office, cold wave conditions are likely to be witnessed isolated pockets of northern region from Friday, while they have announced severe to Very Severe Cold day conditions alert for isolated pockets of Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi during 4th- 6th January 2024.

On Tuesday, the winds blew with a speed of 7.4 km/hr as per the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).

Meanwhile, the city’s air quality remained in the very poor category on Thursday measuring the average AQI of 377, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

According to the air quality monitoring agency, “The air quality is likely to remain in Very Poor category from 05.01.2024 to 07.01.2024. The outlook for subsequent 6 Days: The air quality is likely to remain in the Very Poor to Poor category. There is a possibility of Rain on 08.01.2024,” IITM’s daily bulletin said.
