Counting gets underway for the MCD bypoll results.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday registered a strong performance in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by-elections on Wednesday, winning seven of the 12 wards where counting concluded by mid-morning. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured three seats, while the Congress and the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) picked up one each, according to the final tally released by the State Election Commission.

The biggest victory of the day came from Shalimar Bagh-B, where BJP candidate Anita Jain defeated AAP’s Babita Rana by a margin of 10,101 votes. The BJP also claimed decisive wins in Dwarka-B, Vinod Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Greater Kailash, Dichon Kalan and Chandni Chowk, consolidating its position across key pockets of the capital.

AAP held on to Naraina, where Rajan Arora edged past BJP’s Chandrakanta by just 148 votes, the narrowest result of the bypolls. The party also won Mundka and Dakshinpuri, both with comfortable margins.

The Congress opened its account with a win in Sangam Vihar-A, where Suresh Choudhary finished ahead of the BJP’s Bhuprajeet Gautam. AIFB pulled off a surprise victory in Chandani Mahal, with Mohd Imran defeating AAP’s candidate by 4,692 votes.

NOTA accounted for 0.96 per cent of the total votes polled across the 12 wards.

The bypolls were held on November 30 across 12 seats that fell vacant due to councillors moving to the Delhi Assembly or Parliament. The overall voter turnout stood at 38.51 per cent, with Chandni Mahal recording the highest participation at 55.93 per cent.
