Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta affirmed her government’s commitment to taking care of the maintenance of the Munak Canal which is going to further strengthen the water channel to ensure free flow of water without abstruction.
Gupta held a meeting on Thursday with concerned officials from the neighboring state Haryana, NHAI, PWD, and the Forest Department to discuss the canal’s stretch from Bawana to Inderlok in Delhi.

Discussions during the meeting focused on exploring ways to improve the canal’s maintenance and management, ensuring a steady water supply to the Haiderpur water treatment plant, which caters to a large population in the national capital.
The chief minister informed that as of now the maintenance of the canal and the land near it comes under the Irrigation Department of Haryana government, hence the Delhi government has no role in it.
She said she has come to know that the maintenance of the water channel is not being done in a proper manner as it flows in Delhi in an open form while there is no system in place for security and protection of the canal and its water.
In the area under Delhi’s jurisdiction, the canal is not concretized at some places, which she said results in pollution of its water.
According to the CM, pitching inside the canal has also broken at several points due to lack of better maintenance, and all such reasons affect the flow of water.
She also shared that the Delhi government has also prepared a proposal for constructing an elevated corridor over the canal and if the canal is under the Delhi government, this scheme can also proceed smoothly and effectively.
Meanwhile, it is said that Haryana officials have no objection to the proposal. Nevertheless Gupta stated that she would soon discuss the matter with Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini.
She said since the canal is a lifeline for Delhi, the state government will maintain it with utmost seriousness and dedication.
